DIY Solar Plexus Hard Perfume

Jump to Recipe

I was at our local natural foods co-op recently and saw a solar plexus aromatherapy perfume roller ball. It was $17! DIY projects are a passion of mine so I decided to try and make my own. I used a hard perfume, but you could easily use the same essential oils in a roller. The following is my formulation for a DIY Solar Plexus Hard Perfume.

    What is the Solar Plexus?

Healthline describes the Solar Plexus as–

The solar plexus â€” also called the celiac plexus â€” is a complex system of radiating nerves and ganglia. It’s found in the pit of the stomach in front of the aorta. It’s part of the sympathetic nervous system. It plays an important role in the functioning of the stomach, kidneys, liver, and adrenal glands.

But the solar plexus also has an important spiritual function. It is the site of our 3rd chakra. This chakra is all about having a sense of self. The color associated with this chakra is yellow. The heart chakra comes next (its color is green) and it is all about our relationship with others. But first we must make sure that our sense of self is secure. Some signs of imbalance in this area would be an inability to say no, not understanding your true worth, having a lack of purpose or low self esteem. Imbalance can also swing towards aggression and in some cases bullying but these behaviors can also stem from low self esteem.

    How Aromatherapy helps

I love aromatherapy. While it has been around since ancient times the modern essential oil movement has really taken aromatherapy to a whole new level. The Mayo clinic says–

Aromatherapy is thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls emotions. Many essential oils have been shown to be safe when used as directed.

Note: Essential oils are very concentrated (and powerful) plant medicines. They should not be taken lightly. Huge amounts of plant material go into making essential oils. In most cases the more expensive the oil the more plant matter needed. Use with respect for the power medicine they are.

    What is a solid perfume?

A solid perfume simply captures scent and holds it in a solid form (normally a combination of beeswax and oil) versus a liquid form.

    How to make solid perfume

For this recipe I start with a base of beeswax and almond oil. You can also use olive oil, but olive oil itself has a strong scent that may affect the overall product.

I buy my beeswax in a block from a local bee keeper. Using a sharp knife shave off about 2 TBSP of beeswax. You can also purchase beeswax pastilles which are convenient and easy to use.

Measure out the oil and beeswax and place in a double boiler. I make my own using a pyrex measuring cup sitting in a hot water bath on the stove.

Once melted you are ready to pour into your container. I put my perfume in a 1 ounce tin. Open the empty tin and add your essential oil drops BEFORE the oil. Put your oils in the tin, pouring in the melted oil/wax and cap lightly while it cools. You definitely want to put a cap on it or you risk loosing the essential oils with the heat.

    Which essential oils to use?

Juniper–helps you break up stuck up stagnant energy. It brings positive feelings including love, peace and balance.

Grapefruit–in addition to moving stagnant energy it also helps relieve feelings of tension, irritability and stress. A truly uplifting scent. Note: that grapefruit essential oil can make you more sensitive to the sun. If you live in a very sunny place don’t use where you have sun exposure.

Rosemary–is a great brain stimulant and can help light an inner fire of strength, will and determination.

Tangerine–helps when we have elevated levels of stress that can lead to stuck energy. It helps to release inner tension and frustration. Note: see grapefruit.

Patchouli–calming and tranquilizing. Helps stabilize and alleviate negative looping thoughts.
